Teacher Appreciation Week: Why You Deserve More Than a Mug

Let’s be honest… if Teacher Appreciation Week were really about appreciation, we’d all get a paid nap and a gift card with commas in it.

Instead? You get…

  • A lukewarm breakfast in the staff lounge.
  • A handwritten note from a sweet seventh grader you didn’t even realize liked you.
  • And, yes. Another mug.

Listen, it’s not that we don’t love mugs. (We do. They hold coffee. Coffee keeps us alive.) But if you’re anything like me, you probably already have a cabinet full of “World’s Best Teacher” ceramic reminders that your caffeine addiction is public knowledge.

So let’s talk about what you really deserve this Teacher Appreciation Week:

You deserve time.

Time to plan. Time to eat lunch. Time to breathe. Time to actually teach without interruptions, announcements, tech fails, or surprise assemblies.

You deserve respect.

Not just from students (although yes, please), but from administrators, parents, and the people making decisions about education from their comfy offices miles away from any actual school.

You deserve creativity.

Not scripted lessons. Not cookie-cutter curriculum. The freedom to bring your classroom to life the way you know it works best, for your students.

You deserve support.

Real, helpful support. Not more PDs on topics you already mastered 5 years ago. Not empty “we see you” speeches. But resources. Time. Trust.

You deserve to feel like a human being.

Not a superhero. Not a martyr. Not a robot. A human who loves kids, loves science, and deserves boundaries, balance, and…dare we say it? Joy.

So this Teacher Appreciation Week, sure… enjoy the muffin basket. Smile at the kind notes. Sip from the new mug.

But also: take a moment to appreciate yourself.

You’re doing so much. You’re juggling learning, behavior, testing, admin expectations, and your own life. You’re showing up. You’re trying. You’re making science make sense. And you’re doing it all with heart.

Whether anyone else gets it or not… I see you. You deserve more than a mug. You deserve the moon.

And if no one else says it: thank you.
