Let’s be real: Valentine’s Day in middle school is… a lot.
There’s the kid who brings a giant teddy bear for their “crush” of the week, the group who insists on calling everything “sus,” and the inevitable sugar crash by 2nd period. So how do you handle the holiday of hearts in science class without losing your sanity?
Answer: You embrace it…strategically. Here’s how I make Valentine’s Day in middle school science fun, standards-aligned, and just the right amount of cringey.

1. Channel the Drama into Chemistry (Literal Chemistry)
Love is basically a series of chemical reactions, right
I lean into the theme with lessons like:
- We have “Chemistry” (practice measurement processing skills and simple atomic structure and periodic table)

- Atomic Love (fun Valentine messages revealed with atomic number codes).

- Even a simple lab with color-changing pH reactions gets a festive twist if you toss in pink/red solutions and heart-shaped cutouts for lab stations.
Science stays front and center… but the Valentine vibe makes it feel like a treat.
2. Valentine’s Day Science Cards (Sassy, Punny, and Standards-Based)
Let students design their own Valentines if you’ve got time—it’s stealthy vocabulary review and creative expression. Bonus: they love one-upping each other’s puns.

3. Quick Science Stations with a Cupid Twist
If your kids are hyped up on candy hearts, attention spans will be… limited.
Enter: low-prep, high-engagement science stations.
Ideas I’ve used:
- Classifying Valentine’s candy by physical properties (then graphing it).
- Heart rate experiment pre- and post-jumping jacks (or “seeing your crush” as they’ll say).
- Static electricity with tissue paper hearts—make them “dance” with balloons.
Or try one of these ready made, no-prep Valentine’s themed activities!
It feels fun, but it’s all rooted in observation, data, and inquiry. Science teacher win.
4. A Little Community Building Never Hurts
Its always a great time to sneak in a quick classroom gratitude activity or to build classroom community:
- “I love your class because…” Have students write what they love about other classes. Collect them and deliver to the teachers!
- A round of “Would You Rather: Science Edition” Valentine questions.
Final Verdict?
Valentine’s Day in middle school science can be both cringe and cute (and that’s kind of the magic).
With a little creativity and a lot of flexibility, you can keep things content-driven and tap into the chaos of the holiday in a way that works for you and your students.
So go ahead…lean into the pink glitter just a little. Your kids will love it (even if they pretend not to).
