How I Fit in Fun Without Losing Rigor Before Breaks

Let’s be real: the days before a school break are basically survival mode. The energy is wild, the focus is shaky, and the temptation to toss on a movie is very real. But here’s the thing… I’ve learned I can keep my class fun and academically legit in the days leading up to a break… without losing my mind.

Here’s how I balance the chaos and still make science count:


1. Theme the Learning (But Keep the Content Solid)

I don’t throw out my standards just because it’s the week before Thanksgiving. Instead, I find ways to theme my lessons. Want to learn about chemical reactions? Great—let’s dissolve candy canes or make fizzing snow. Studying classification? Time to sort spooky organisms or mythical creatures.

2. Project Days with Purpose

Short, engaging projects are gold before a break. I love anything hands-on that gives students some creative wiggle room but still ties directly into our standards. Think:

  • Designing a “winter-proof” shelter using insulation concepts
  • Creating a board game that reviews our semester content
  • Building contraptions to keep an “egg elf” safe from a fall

They’re collaborating, thinking critically, and honestly? Having a blast.
